“I finally realized just how much I grew up professionally in Chicago after have arrived back in Brazil. I really have a different way of dealing with several feet pathologies. Everything that I saw in Chicago was very important to me. I have done Scarf, Akin, Weil, Topaz, Arthrodesis, Bröstrom / Gould and I asked 05 physicians to buy a shockwave unit to start treatment, still not available in our state. Moreover, refining my techniques for suture of skin, the capsule of the 1st. MTP, dressings and detentions. East nurses, aids, tools to work on balance and when dividing the functions of each one. I have circulated among orthopedists that brought out the lessons of Chicago and therefore I have been invited to several meetings. Few believed that I could spend 02 months in the cold Chicago and back with a very specific learning ... Thank you very much for how I was approved by all, especially you, your family, your father. I did not expect so much education and kindness. Sincerely My thanks to everyone. All were part of my recent transformation.”

I am most sincerely appreciative and respectful to both Dr. Weil Jr. and Dr. Weil Sr. for the incredible Fellowship experience. Daily, I'm reminded of the tools and skills in a business, clinical research and medical/surgical perspective that I've acquired from my Fellowship experience. It was truly a privilege to work alongside and with them in all aspects of the practice.

Having completed a nationally recognized, highly intense and comprehensive 3-year residency training program, I wasn't sure that there was much more to learn in training. But it is through the both of them during my Fellowship experience that I've sharpened my patient evaluation techniques and improved on my surgical skills/finesse. It was truly a most beneficial, career altering experience for me.

I am proud to be a past fellow of the Institute and aspire to reflect their influence on me in the structuring of my professional career.

Spending a year at the Weil Foot and Ankle Institute as a Fellow was an extremely rewarding experience both professionally and personally. The knowledge I obtained clinically and surgically is unparalleled. I cannot overstate the importance of learning the business side of our profession, and the ease to which I transitioned from Fellow to Practitioner. Most importantly I gained lifelong mentors/friends to continue my education in the practice of medicine.

Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence. This famous quote by the legendary Vince Lombardi defines the impact of this renowned fellowship on my career. In one year, I was taught to chase perfection in the operating room, diagnosis of pathology, research protocol, and presentations of publications. This relentless drive for progress in combination with discipline and work ethic provided by this world renowned fellowship created a standard by which excellence is measured in the speciality of foot and ankle and has become the foundation upon which I have built my career.

"My fellowship at the Weil Foot and Ankle Institute was a career-changing experience, and I reap the benefits of it every day in my practice. I am often asked why I chose to do a fellowship and why specifically I choose this one.

1. Proficiency. Right off the bat, I want to mention that I had a great residency experience. I was Chief Resident at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, and completed a 3-year PM&S-36 residency. I felt that my director and attendings equipped me with the ability and knowledge to enter a successful practice, and I was confident in my skills. Confidence? Yes. Mastery? Not exactly. That’s what a fellowship does. It potentially takes a “good doctor,” sharpens up their skills, and attempts to make them a “great doctor.” Dr. Weil and the entire team of surgeons at WFAI hone in on what it takes to “get you to the next level.

2. Extra Attention. Most residencies programs have 3-5 participants per year. That’s 9-15 hungry, eager brains starving for learning. The Weil fellowship usually has one to two fellows per year and everyone’s focus is on your growth, both personally and professionally.

3. Special Skills. One of the most attractive features of any fellowship is who the fellowship director is. Most of them are pioneers and leaders in the field, and are involved in complicated specialties, such as reconstruction and advanced wound care. Some are great business people and excellent at practice management. I didn’t have to make a decision here – the surgeons at WFAI are innovators in both surgery and business. Seeing how that all translated into clinical practice was invaluable, and I have used those skills daily in the operating room and in the board room.

4. Research. I think that research and fellowships go hand-in-hand. The time management issues that accompany residency somehow prevent adequate quality research time. Research advances medicine and the profession as a whole. Individually, it also focuses and forces one to critically think about what they’re doing. It helps one grow as physician. Having guidance to construct and follow-through with quality research at WFAI changed the way I evaluate my patients and practice evidence-based medicine."

After finishing a well rounded surgical residency I had the skills to succeed. After finishing my fellowship at the Weil Foot and Ankle Institute, I had the confidence to succeed. The year I spent in Chicago became a realization about how the practice of medicine should be undertaken. The level of care, the commraderee, the in depth thought that goes into all medical and professional decisions made me appreciate that medicine is more than technique. More important than technique, the thought that goes into the decision is what is important. I feel that this year helped me in medicine and in life. I have made life long friendships and feel a part of the bigger "Weil Family".

My experience as a fellow at the Weil Foot and Ankle Institute has afforded me opportunities in all aspects of the profession of podiatry. I would not be where I am today without the fellowship in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery at the Weil Foot & Ankle Institute. Taking away the obvious, that the fellowship helped me to obtain my current position as an associate partner at the Weil Foot Institute, the fellowship has opened so many opportunities I would otherwise not have been able to obtain. Through my association with the fellowship and the Weil Foot and Ankle Institute, I am a staff podiatrist for the Chicago Marathon, a member of the Illinois Podiatric Medical Association Board of Directors and CME Committee, and on the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons EBM/Research Committee. I would fully endorse the fellowship to anyone interested. It will provide you with that added training to distinguish you from other graduates of a podiatric residency.

The fellowship took me and my surgical skills to the next level. Even though I completed a very well rounded surgical residency,it wasn't until I finished at WFAI that I understood what it really meant to be a true foot and ankle surgeon. Not only did it allow to me learn from the best surgeons/instructors in the field, but it also taught me how to truly appreciate the skill and intellect that one needs to be a foot and ankle surgeon. I also got the opportunity to see how a business is run on a day to day basis. The experience truly made me who I am today. I have also been consulted by the PGA, MLB, and the NFL. I am the team podiatrist for the Jacksonville Barracudas (hockey), although the league they are in has folded.
