Dr. Stern was raised in Evanston, Illinois, and attended college at the University of Illinois. He attended the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine from 1972 to 1976 (now part of The William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science). Dr. Stern was selected to do an Orthopedic Fellowship at RUSH Presbyterian St Luke’s Medical Center from 1976 to 1980. He has been in practice full time since 1980.

Dr. Stern was the first podiatrist to have a paper published in the American Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He has served as section head for podiatry for the Department of Orthopedic Surgery for the last 25 years at RUSH University Medical Center and RUSH North Shore Medical Center.

Dr. Stern has trained in neurosensory examination at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and is certified by the Dellon Institute of Peripheral Nerve Surgery. He is trained in the latest surgical techniques and medical treatment of peripheral neuropathy.
